
Jazmine Sullivan is a native of and raised at home in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Her mother Pam is a former backing singer at Philadelphia International Records. As a child the father of her was appointed as one of the cities' Historic Strawberry Mansion curator. Their family eventually moved into the building's historic structure. As a 2005 Philadelphia High School for the Creative and Performing Arts graduated She is an instructor in singing. Sullivan sang as a contralto for the children's choir and then in the years later, she sang as an adult in the choir. Sullivan experienced only a small amount of secular music. She relates that she was 11 when someone asked her to sing solos at the church. The singer wasn't yet ready for. "Then the time came that McDonald's was hosting a contest for kids in major cities, I got a chance to sing 'Accept Whatever God Allows' on It's Showtime at the Apollo and the audience were very supportive". Stevie Wonder sang her part when he turned 13. Sullivan was signed initially to Jive Records at the age fifteen. It was her first time signing with Jive Records when she was 15. She recorded an entire album. However, this album never saw release. Sullivan was then dropped on the labels. Missy Elliott was her producer for several tracks on their debut album. Among them "Backstabbers" was a viral track recorded by Timbaland and written by Elliott.
